By now, the gaming community definitely has heard about "Genshin Impact," an open-world role-playing game developed by Chinese game developer miHoYo. It was released in September 2020 on various platforms, including on Android and iOS devices, along with PlayStation 4 and PC.
miHoYo's masterpiece has generated tremendous interest, not just from the gaming community but also from professionals, garnering a nomination from The Game Awards 2020. It was also hailed as one of the best gaming apps on Google Play Store and iOS App Store.
With the attention it is getting, is "Genshin Impact" really worth the hype?
Why 'Genshin Impact' is Popular
According to ActivePlayer.io, a game statistics website, there are 21 million registered players as of January 2021 across the platforms it's available on.
Looking at the same site, concurrent players often reach hundreds of thousands, so for those who haven't yet checked out the game, why is it so popular?
Perhaps one of the best things about "Genshin Impact" is its beautiful graphics.
Nintendo's "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" is well-known for its breathtaking visuals, which is why when miHoYo's game was just about to be released, people began comparing the anime-ish game to the Nintendo Switch title. As per Forbes, it appears like "Genshin Impact" was "heavily" influenced by the now-iconic Zelda title.
But aside from its stunning graphics, its gameplay is as enjoyable as other legendary RPGs in the game. The open-world aspect is also something that keeps pulling players into the fictional world of Teyvat, especially as it gives players the chance to explore every part of the map.
The gacha game is available via the Google Play Store for Android devices and the Apple App Store for iOS smartphones. Players can install it for free, but there are in-app purchases.
A Title for Everyone
Perhaps another reason why the RPG title has become big in the industry is its availability, not just in big consoles like PlayStation 4 or Windows PCs.
Tons of gamers can't precisely afford high-end gadgets, so seeing an open-world RPG game on mobile devices makes the game accessible even for gamers who don't have consoles or a proper gaming laptop.
But does "Genshin Impact" work properly on mobile devices?
'Genshin Impact' Experience on Mobile
Surprisingly, the game offers some good gaming experience on mobile, whether it be an Android or iOS device.
However, you still need a decent device to play smoothly. Playing on a mid-range device could give the players a glimpse into what "Genshin Impact" can offer, but if your device doesn't have that much of a powerful chipset such as a Snapdragon 888, then the game may not go as smoothly as you wish.
Often, even a few minutes of gaming is enough to take the toll on a mid-range device.
Nevertheless, the RPG title and its interface have become much more user-friendly on mobile than it is on desktops and consoles, as per VICE, and it does make some difference when it comes to gamer experience.
However, the gyro aiming can be a curse or a blessing, especially when you're using characters such as Venti or Fischl, who use a bow and arrow as their weapon of choice. It is sometimes fun as you can easily target some big enemies. But it is a pain most of the time--although it could also depend on the player's skills.
Lastly, if players want to play the game continuously, they'll definitely want a device with a larger storage capacity. Game developer miHoYo is known to release major updates every six weeks, and most of the time, the updates are hefty, especially when they are adding new regions, and would take a lot of space up.
Overall Impression
With the right mobile device, "Genshin Impact" definitely provides the same level of entertainment as it does on a console or a gaming PC. But if you have a cheaper device that isn't exactly made for gaming, you'll encounter some problems that could change your gameplay experience.
