A Taiwanese tourist recovered his missing iPhone 11 Pro Max one year after accidentally dropping it in a lake.
The good fortune did not stop there, as the owner discovered that the phone is still working after being submerged in the lake all this time.
The Man, the iPhone, and the Worst Drought in Decades
The tourist identified as "Chen" went out to paddleboard with his iPhone in a plastic waterproof phone pouch that he wore around his neck on Mar. 5, 2020.
According to an Apr. 7 report from Taiwan News, Chen repeatedly lost his balance and fell off his board more than once, which led to his phone's disappearance.
A friend of his advised him not to worry and said that Chen would see his iPhone again.
A year later, Chen was informed that his iPhone has been found.
The Sun Moon Lake had endured the country's worst drought in 56 years, with some areas completely bone dry.
The natural phenomenon ultimately led the locals to see the missing iPhone lying on the dry lakebed.
Chen hurriedly went to the lake to recover his missing iPhone, and locals shared that not long after picking up his phone, the water started to return to the lake.
When he took his iPhone back home, he found that it remained fully intact despite being submerged inside the heavily soiled waterproof pouch.
After charging it back up, Chen found that the iPhone turned on, and all functionalities remained normal.
Apple's Promised Waterproofing Rating Tested
Chen's phone is not the first iPhone 11 to have been recovered from a lake after an extended period of time.
On Mar. 8, CBC shared the story of Fatemeh Ghodsi, who found her iPhone 11 six months after dropping it on a bumper boat ride in Harrison Lake in Canada.
The iPhone was recovered by divers Clayton and Heather Helkenberg, who devotes their time to clear out the garbage from lakes for fun.
According to 9to5Mac's report on Mar. 8, the couple spotted the iPhone 11 and found that it still works, which allowed them to track down Ghodsi and return it to her.
The couple added that they usually place recovered phones in a container with silica gel before attempting to turn it back on, but not with the iPhone 11s.
"I took it home, cleaned the dirt off of it and it just turned right on, so it was pretty amazing," Clayton said.
Unlike in Chen's case, Ghodsi shared that the microphone and speaker of her iPhone 11 are broken, but everything else is in perfect shape.
"I was in complete shock, initially to start with. It was kind of like a zombie phone coming back to me, because I'd totally made peace with it being gone," she shared.
