Ming-Chi Kuo, a reliable Apple leaker, claimed that the iPhone manufacturer's upcoming Augmented Reality headset could be the lightest AR device in the market once it is released. The giant manufacturer could achieve this if it uses Fresnel lens design, which is also predicted by the analyst.
According to Apple Insider's latest report, if the tech giant company uses Fresnel Lens, the upcoming AR headset could weigh less than 150 grams. Aside from this, rumors also claimed that the manufacturer would increase the new wearable gadget's field of view.
Kuo explained that the Fresnel lens could be the design solution for the current AR devices, which rely on ultra-short focal length lenses since it can increase the optical performance of the device while lessening the bulkiness and heaviness of the gadget.
"We believe that Apple will use a hybrid Fresnel lens design further to enhance the Fresnel lens's optical performance (e.g., improve vignetting and optical artifacts), and each hybrid Fresnel lens comprises three stacked Fresnel lenses," said Kuo via Apple Insider.
"The Apple HMD Fresnel lens material is plastic. Because of the customized material and coating, the light transmission is not lower than glass," added the Apple analyst.
Apple AR headset's other possible features
On the other hand, WCCF Tech's previous report explained that since the upcoming Apple AR headset will be ultra-light, the users will no longer have to worry about fatigue. If this really happens, it will solve the heavy-weight issues of current AR and VR devices since they usually weigh around 300 to 400 grams, as well as issues with their bulkier designs.
When will it arrive?
Aside from the possible Fresnel lens and micro-OLEDs, Kuo also claimed that Apple might release the new AR headset in mid-2022. However, it is important to remember that this is still a rumored release date and will still depend on Apple's final decision.
