Apple iPhone 13 Leak Shows Display to Use Samsung LTPO OLEDs with 120Hz Refresh Rate [Report]

Apple's iPhone 13 has more than seven months to prepare and its recent reports, as well as speculations, suggest that it would be using Samsung's LTPO OLED Display with a 120Hz refresh rate. This is a massive turn for the future of the iPhone lineup, particularly as the company is known for sticking with its Retina display, which was used since the debut of the iPhone 5.

Apple's Retina Journey, Through the Years

Iconically, the Retina display is known to be the mainstay on Apple's technology, which has been a massive topic in the past iterations of its devices, from iPads to Mac PCs. Apple was initially known to stick with the Retina display despite the more colorful and flexible OLED, which has been used by Samsung and LG for a long time with their TV displays and smartphones.

However, Apple seems to be breaking traditions and finally going for the upgrade this time since it plans to leave Retina behind, opting for the display that reportedly aims to bring more color to the picture. Since the iPhone 5's release last 2012, Retina was a mainstay, which was then a massive upgrade from iPhone 4's LCD.

Apple to Utilize Samsung's LTPO OLED for iPhone 13

According to a report by The Elec on Monday, March 22, Apple has reportedly secured Samsung or has contracted them into making a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) display for the iPhone 13. More importantly, the LTPO is part of the OLED display, and it holds a massive refresh rate of 120Hz, which is a massive one for a smartphone.

There has been debate over the LED display superiority of the smartphones, with Retina focusing on clear and crisp images, and OLED focusing on the overall refresh rate, color, and snappy functions. Naturally, the display superiority comes down to the preference of the user, because both have their flaws and problems in the long run.

On the other hand, The Elec reported that it would debut two different displays for the iPhone 13, particularly as Samsung works on the LTPO thin-film transistors (TFT) for high-end iPhones. This means that the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max would have an upgraded screen than the regular lineups if ever Apple would still release the 4-variant smartphone line.

iPad Pro is known to have the "Pro Motion Technology" which iconically makes its high-process display easier for the eyes to follow, bringing the best graphics and appearance to its users. According to Mac Rumors, Apple is on the verge of debuting this technology and would be doing this for the iPhone 13, releasing later.

The transition of Apple's displays is wild, especially as its Mac PCs and iPad lineup are rumored to be debuting the miniLED technology, leaving behind the LCD and Retina displays from its previous iterations. While those are on-going, the iPhone 13 would also ditch the Retina, in favor of the cheaper and flexible OLED from Samsung.
