TikTok 'Back Crack Challenge': How to Do it and Is it Safe?

TikTok has debuted another crazy challenge among its massive list of trending videos on social media, but this particular one has safety concerns from the audience and the community as it lifts a person and "cracks the back." While the activity is not exactly "cracking" a person's back, it features a therapeutic relief of releasing air off the stiff joints.

TikTok's "Back Crack Challenge" has been catching up to the trends, as it brings people to their knees and asks the audience to try it and complete the challenge. The users and influencers that have participated in the act attest to the "therapeutic" benefits of the activity, as it pops off the joints in the back, bringing the "cracking" sensation like the ones in the knuckles.

These activities are mostly done by licensed therapists, chiropractors, and the like, but this is the first that the public is engaging in an act that promotes joint cracking activities that are mostly left to the experts. Moreover, there are certain issues and concerns from its audience regarding its safety and the way it entices people to try the activity.

Cracking the back usually comes off after a strenuous day at work or sitting too long at office chairs or in school, as it can stiffen the joints that are on a person's body. Moreover, doing a simple stretch could lead to the back "cracking" or the joints popping off and giving the distinct sound of popping off like crushed crackers or newly opened bottles.

According to Healthline, cracking one's back is a healthy thing to do, as it promotes stretching and "resetting the joints" that have been subject to various activities that led to its current state. Popping off these joints have no adverse effect on a human body or their health, as long as it is done properly and proper pressure is used by the person while doing so.

However, this case applies to cracking one's back, and not to the TikTok challenge of letting other people crack one's back for them. Other people doing the activity is another issue entirely, especially if these people are not licensed professionals like physical therapists and chiropractors. Moreover, other people cannot feel the pressure compared to the activity done by the person themselves.

The idea of the TikTok Back Crack Challenge is to use a person's body weight to pop the joints on one's back so that it stretches better, without the need for twisting the body and applying pressure using hands or tools. Moreover, it can be done by anyone without any specific equipment or devices, as it only requires 2 people to do so.

  • Make the person that wants to get their backs cracked kneel and face opposite as the assistant
  • Put both hands behind the head (forming a sideways triangle), and stiffen it so that people can carry them off the ground.
  • Make the person carrying the one kneeling put their arms through the arms and slip it like carrying a backpack.
  • Like a backpack, lift the person as if carrying them into one's shoulders and lean forward into a bow position.
