Apple and Samsung Say Smartphones No Longer Need MicroSD, Here's Why

Samsung has cut the microSD card slot from its new Galaxy S21 Ultra smartphone, distancing itself from the tech scene this year. Although a lot of smartphone users shrugged at the thought of phones not having microSDs, the others were outraged.

This is because microSDs help in adding more storage to phones, and the option to plug in external SD is a vital feature for people who like to take pictures and download films.

Samsung and Apple on eliminating microSD

However, Samsung and Apple are now making people wonder if microSDs are still important, especially now that cloud and growing internal storage are a thing, according to The Verge.

Both Samsung and Apple are adamant that smartphones no longer need microSDs in their external system. Analysts even predicted that phones in the future will be portless, and Samsung's decision to eliminate microSD card port early on can be another sign of a trend towards internal storage on phones.

Despite this, there are still phones that will let you up to your maximum storage with an extra memory card for now, but that might not be the case in the future, according to ScreenRant.

Importance of storage space

In principle, experts recommend using the in-built memory over an external microSD card because apps usually can't be installed on the card, and internal memory is faster and more reliable, according to SCMP.

But eliminating the additional SD card space is still difficult to apply to newer phones since the videos have quality as high as 4K and can cause 128GB to fill up easily.

This is why experts stated that photographers who like to take pictures in high resolutions and shoot videos should go for more internal storage, at least around 512GB of memory, according to LifeHack.

As for users of Apple, Google, or Microsoft cloud storage space, you can get by with just 64GB of storage space, as long as you regularly delete pictures that you have backed up to your cloud.

For those who love to listen to different types of music or those who love to watch films, you should go for at least 128GB of internal storage space, especially if you find yourself streaming films and songs regularly.

An hour's worth of streaming movies and music can max out 20GB. To be able to calculate your data needs, each song is around 6MB, and a film has to be between 500MB and 2GB.

It is important to note that the decreasing prices of internal memory hardware usually means that new phones will have more than enough memory so that you can get smartphone models with 128GB memory for less than $200.

Also, you may need to pay twice for a phone with twice the memory size. Only those who shell out $800 or more will be admitted to the storage heaven with no less than 1TB of space.

Keep in mind that the memory space that your phone promises you is not the memory space that you will get because a portion of it will already be used up by the phone's operating system, usually around 30GB. Once you start installing apps, it will take up your memory as well.
