Apple AirPods Max, AirPods Pro: How to Use Spatial Audio to Amplify Sounds Making You Feel 'Surrounded!'

Spatial Audio is a limited feature across most wireless and wired audio devices, and it is mostly focused on delivering a different kind of music experience that would let users feel as if the sound is coming from everywhere. This feature resembles the "Surround Sound" capabilities which initially debuted with the popular audio company, Dolby, and now, it comes with Apple's AirPods Pro and AirPods Max releases.

To achieve spatial audio, users would need a noise-canceling or noise-isolating capable audio device, and both of those are exclusive to later generations of the Apple AirPods, and it calls it the "Spatial Audio." This feature is exclusive for Apple's AirPods Max and Pro, as both are the only noise-canceling audio device, in which Apple has integrated the feature with its settings.

The AirPods Max and AirPods Pro are both set to their default settings of noise-canceling and make external and background sounds unable to penetrate or seep their way into a person's ear that detects sounds. However, Apple has these settings which include environment awareness called "Transparency" which functions as the regular AirPods, and the Spatial Audio.

Apple Spatial Audio can be switched out between the regular, default mode of the so-called active noise cancellation, as both features are almost identical to each other. However, Spatial Audio is different in the sense that surround sound is its main function, which is also considered as the previously trending "8-D Audio" that bounces off sound from one side to another.

According to Gizmodo, Apple's Spatial Audio is best paired with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or Apple TV clips that have the Dolby Atmos, 5.1 channel, or 7.1 channel audio options which are all representing surround sound. Moreover, the function is easily changed or toggled on an iPhone setting, and it only requires the device and gadget that it pairs itself to.

How to Activate Spatial Audio

  • Ensure that the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max is connected to the iPhone or iPad which runs on the latest operating system version of the gadget.
  • Next, head to Settings > Bluetooth > and look for the name of one's AirPods Pro or AirPods Max
  • Click the "i" symbol at the right side of the AirPods name to toggle its settings and other functions like the name change.
  • Look for the "Spatial Audio" settings and turn it on. Automatically, turning it on would change noise cancellation to a Spatial Audio-enabled device for most sounds. It would be better integrated if the played audio is tweaked with Dolby Atmos, 5.1 channel, or 7.1 channel.
