USPS has chosen the manufacturer for its soon-releasing Electric Mail Truck, which would replace the current postal service delivery vans that are gas-powered with zero-emissions technology for the environment. The federal agency has been searching for the manufacturer of its electric trucks to change the way of deliveries and it has landed with Oshkosh Defense.
Despite the many applicants and interested parties who have joined in presenting prototypes, designs, and bids with the United States Postal Service (USPS), one stood out and has secured the contract with the agency. Oshkosh Defense is a known tactical vehicle manufacturer which provides heavy-duty equipment and vehicles for various parties.
The contract binds Oshkosh Defense in a multi-billion dollar deal that would span several years, to deliver, manufacture, and service the electric mail trucks for the U.S. government agency. The electric vehicle would be under the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle project of the USPS, which aims to use renewable sources of technology.
USPS NGDV Electric Mail Truck Contract for Oshkosh Defense
According to Oshkosh Defense's press release, the Wisconsin-based military and tactical vehicle contractor would be bound in a 10-year-plan with USPS to create, develop, and maintain the NDGV of the agency. Initially, USPS has been selecting over a pool of known electric vehicle companies including Workhorse and Lordstown Motors for the venture.
Ultimately, Oshkosh Defense won the bid and secured the contract, initially receiving $482 million to start the project and develop the EV for the next-generation deliveries. USPS has committed itself to an emission-free future of deliveries with the country's mail and other packages that it would carry, which would have a daily route in place.
The multi-billion-dollar contract would be distributed in a couple of years and would be completed in the next decade in working with the postal service. The company would also need to set up power carrier routes on its plans, as the round-trip deliveries would not cut a day's work of delivery.
USPS Electric Mail Trucks in 2023
According to USPS, Oshkosh Defense is expected to deliver the first batch of electric vehicles by 2023, which is roughly two years from now, and have the initial fleet up and running to deliver mail all-week long. Moreover, USPS said that it requires and stated in the contract that the agency has asked for 165,000 electric mail trucks for ten years.
This is one of the first significant upgrades that were made by USPS, as it revealed that most of its vehicles are over 30 years in service already. Moreover, there are currently 230,000 mail trucks that are in circulation and used by the company to deliver mail and other packages in different states and locations in the country.
