Apple has launched its "Activation Lock" which would be available for use to everyone who has retrieved their Apple device after being stolen or locked from the iCloud website, provided that they enter their credentials. The website is purely self-service and can be done entirely from home, without the need to go to service centers of the company.
The most valuable technology company in the world, Apple, has one of the most impenetrable and sophisticated security systems in the world, and losing one's iCloud account or locking it from the website protects the device. While there are various reasons for locking an iPhone, iPad, or iPod, there is only one way to unlock it and that is via Apple.
Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been restricted to go outside to avoid social interaction, infections, and spreading the virus among the public and the household. While scheduling a repair or activation lock for Apple employees to do is better (especially if the user forgot one's iCloud), this could help in staying safe from the virus.
Activation Lock for Apple Devices-US Exclusive
According to Redditor u/amq55 via the r/Apple forum, Apple has recently launched this feature earlier this day, and would be exclusive to the United States region for now, and soon coming to the rest of the world. The Activation Lock feature can be accessed via Apple's Support website and it allows users to proceed with the feature or reset their iCloud account to access it easily.
How to Turn Off Activation Lock via Website
While the website might be a self-service feature, the only DIY part is applying for the unlocking of the smart device with one's Email Address, Serial Number of the Device, and a human verification before proceeding. According to Apple Support's Request platform, it is important to note that all data are to be erased permanently, and backups would only restore Activation Lock.
After entering the email and serial number, the support website would ask for users in more specific information about the device including proof of ownership such as original purchase date, screenshot or picture of the receipt, and where users have purchased the device. Apple would then use the information for verification and confirming the device ownership.
Additionally, it is important to note that the Activation Lock website cannot proceed when a device is still in "Lost Mode," which can be turned on or off via the iCloud website. The Activation Lock security is a feature that can be activated by the user on their lost iPhones, iPad, or iPod when it is attempted to be accessed and deleted.
