Facebook Most Popular Among American Adults, Finds Pew Study: Here's Why

The results of a Pew Research Center survey among 1,500 Internet users in the United States reveal that Facebook is the most popular social media website among American adults.

Facebook's popularity is, by far, ahead of the popularity of other social media websites as the social network continues its dominance in the space.

While the growth of the social network has slowed down, compared to the significant increases that was seen over the previous year for rival platforms such as Twitter and Instagram in the percentage of adults that use them, user engagement levels for Facebook has increased.

The membership of Facebook didn't change much between 2013 and 2014, holding steady at about 71 percent of the respondents. A notable exception, however, is in the number of older adults signing up with the social network. The survey is the first Pew Research report that saw over half of Internet users of 65 years old and older, at 56 percent, as Facebook users.

Facebook is by far the most popular social media website. LinkedIn and Pinterest were tied at second place, but very far behind Facebook as only 28 percent of the respondents use them.

Rounding out the top five are Instagram with 26 percent and Twitter at 23 percent.

As other platforms are continuing to ramp up their user figures, Facebook's growth can be mostly seen in the engagement of the social network with its users.

The report found that 70 percent of Facebook users visit the website daily, with 45 percent stating that they log in to Facebook several times per day. The number of its users visiting Facebook increased significantly from 63 percent last year, while users of other social networks such as Instagram and Pinterest saw no significant change in user engagement.

For Twitter, the percentage of users logging in daily decreased from 46 percent in 2013 to 36 percent last year, while for LinkedIn, the percentage of users visiting the website less frequently has increased.

Of the respondents, 52 percent use more than one social media website, an increase compared to 42 percent in 2013. In connection, less adults use only one social media website, with the percentage dropping from 36 percent to 28 percent. For respondents that only have one social media account, 79 percent of them only use Facebook.

The figures of the survey are based on the findings that among all Americans aged 18 years old or older, 81 percent are Internet users. The survey was implemented through interviews conducted by telephone between Sept. 11 to Sept. 14 and Sept. 18 to Sept. 21 of last year.
