Reddit's popular trading group WallStreetBets have sort of issued a response to Robinhood's Super Bowl ad, which has been uploaded on their YouTube channel, by launching a crowdfunding page in order to gain enough resources to buy their own Super Bowl ad space and create their own advertisement.
WSB Wants to Make a Commercial
According to Mashable, a member of the group decided to create a thread on the now-popular WSB group, saying that the group should buy a Super Bowl ad space and create their own ad in response to Robinhood's.
With that, a GoFundMe page has been set up, and there seems to be actual effort going into the fundraiser as they have now raised $28,140 of its $6,000,000 goal.
But apart from the group members of WallStreetBets, the fundraising effort has found support from actor Leslie David Baker, who is known as Stanley Hudson from the hit sitcom "The Office," among other things.
"I would love to help you all make this happen," Baker posted on Reddit. "If this is something you're seriously considering let me know, my team and I will use all resources at our disposal to get us the advertisement, shoot it, get the talent, crew, and get it out in time for Super Bowl. You have my full support!"
The actor also said that he has recently wrapped up shooting a Super Bowl commercial, which will be shown this weekend, so he "could talk to the same people."
WallStreetBets vs Robinhood
The whole WallStreetBets vs Robinhood issue started when the independent investors from the Reddit group began rallying behind struggling companies like GameStop--something that everyone would have known by now.
So, how did Robinhood fit into the story and why does it seem like the Reddit investors are not a fan of the trading app?
During the early days of the so-called "meme stock" rally, Reddit investors did use such apps like Robinhood to raise the stock price of GameStop, but later on, the app blocked trading for the company.
And so, when Robinhood released the ad, they weren't extremely happy, especially as the commercial celebrated retail investors like the Reddit group members, and still prevented them from buying GameStop stocks.
'We Are All Investors'
For anyone who wants to watch the Robinhood Super Bowl ad, it's available on their YouTube channel, entitled "We are all investors."
The comment section of the said video has been turned off.
One of the moderators of the r/WallStreetBets group said, "The worst thing about Robinhood airing a Super Bowl ad is it might actually convince some people to be their customers."
Nevertheless, it's unclear whether the Reddit group that rallied behind GameStop and AMC Theaters can release a Super Bowl ad, since according to Baker, "time is of the essence" to have it released during the Super Bowl season.
Recently, there are news of MGM buying movie rights for a WallStreetBets and GameStop movie, with the people behind the movie "The Social Network" apparently working on it, so it won't be surprising if they start using popular media to help their cause.
