With Apple's brand new M1 chip series going in hard and competing with other brands that have been around for quite a while like Intel and AMD, it seems like the company is doing okay. The Apple M1 MacBook Air is what Apple is pushing as of the moment. However, it seems like the computer chip series is still riddled with a few problems including a screensaver bug.

According to the story by The Verge, the writer, Jay Peters picked up the brand new MacBook Air that was equipped with the new Apple M1 chip and so far, the writer has said to be enjoying the brand new Apple product. The new Apple MacBook Air M1 was referred to as speedy and that its battery was fantastic. However, there is a particular issue that was brought up.

Every once in a while, it was found that the screensaver will suddenly take over the Apple device's entire computer. This is despite the fact that the writer reportedly never uses a screensaver. It was also said that frustratingly, the new screensaver would then render the laptop inoperable until the writer would completely close the screen and even reopen it.

It now seems like the writer was not the only one that was seeing this particular bug, according to a particular MacRumors article. Others have also come forward to share very similar issues when it comes to the M1-equipped Apple MacBook Airs, Pros, and also the Minis on the MacRumors' forums, the Reddit threads, and even the Apple support forums.

One user on the forums found on MacRumors even said that they have seen the particular bug on their own 16-inch MacBook Pro, which previously had Intel chips involved, so perhaps this could be a problem along with macOS Big Sur. A number of people were reporting this particular issue in the seen Reddit thread say that they have a number of accounts found on the same computer.

It was reported that the user had set up two different accounts on their MacBook Air. A certain user on the Apple support forums had disabled Fast User Switching and had said that they weren't seeing the problem regarding the screensavers. It was also noted that perhaps there could be a workaround until Apple finally addresses the said bug. Apple, however, did not immediately reply to the given request for a comment.

Apple CEO Tim Cook gave a statement on CNBC regarding Apple's strategy when it comes to owning its own core technologies. It was stated that the company now has a long-term strategy of being able to both own and control the more primary technologies that are behind the products that they make.

How to Fix Apple M1 MacBook Air screensaver bug?

There's a temporary fix courtesy CultofMac, that follows these few steps:

  1. Open the System Preferences option on your Mac.
  2. Open the Users & Groups, then click the Login Options.
  3. Choose the padlock in order to unlock this particular menu, users should then enter their password.
  4. Disable the Show fast user switching menu option.
  5. Go back to the System Preferences option.
  6. Click the Dock & Menu Bar, then proceed to select the Fast User Switching.
  7. Ensure that the Show in Menu Bar and the Show in Control Center are both disabled.

As of the moment, this will prevent those spontaneous screensavers from coming up. However, this is still an unofficial fix.
