Tando Security Drones Uses Visual Navigation and LiDAR-like Technology to 'See and Feel Environment'

For outdoors, typical security drones can simply be used with GPS to patrol around. But for an indoor set-up it's difficult for GPS to work. The launch of the new Tando security drone is about to change the game.

The Tando Security Drone is developed by Indoor Robotics based in Israel and uses both optical and thermal imaging cameras, They thoroughly scan the environment in 360 Degrees even when they are mounted in a tile.

How the Tando Security Drone Works

New Atlas reports that instead of utilizing GPS which security drones normally use, the Tando drone uses a combination of visual navigation and LiDAR-like technology to scan and recognize certain landmarks. Similar to LiDAR technology, it targets a specific object and accurately measures its distance by using laser light and sensor.

As a result, the Tando Drone identifies the landmarks, location, and distances of any foreign object or point of interest.

According to Indoor Robotics' Chief Business Officer, Ofir Bar Levav he describes the drone by saying "The device is basically 'seeing' the environment, and is also 'feeling' the distances and thus knows its precise location at any given time."

The data gathered by the drone is processed in real time using artificial intelligence. It then translates to algorithms that are stored on a cloud-based server. The device is also controlled via an app. When unfamiliar objects, intruders, or change in temperatures causing fire, immediately the device alerts the user via the app.

How To Use the Tando Security Drone

The device is a quadcopter drone which includes a ceiling-mounted "Tile" where the device should recharge its battery. It is also connected to an App that is used to navigate the system.

The security drone is ideally used during the night time, when employees and people have emptied the place. The drone serves as a night security guard that will roam around and check the place. While it's not patrolling yet, the drone hangs on the ceiling through its tile.

During the set time that it needs to be on duty, the device simply detaches from the tile and patrols up and down the hallway and throughout the place in a 360-degree scan.

For users who need to use security drones for a bigger building area, it is suggested to use the Tando Security drones as a cooperative fleet. In that way, different drones can be assigned to different areas, and will do its job efficiently.

Prices for the security drones have not yet been released. However, Levav highlights that the cost for the Tando drones will certainly be less expensive as compared to hiring human security guards or setting up stationary sensors. The new security drone will eventually replace manual work with lesser cost.
