Facebook is now receiving much attention after users are finding out about the massive amount of data that it stores compared to other messaging apps. According to BGN, it was during the WWDC 2020 that Apple revealed iOS 14. In line with the goal to protect their users' privacy, the company created a protection tool called App Privacy Labels for users to be aware of the amount of data or information that apps source from them through their use.
Apple's Privacy App
The new app works by advising iPhone and iPad users approximately how much information an app collects. This new update has rankled companies that make a living off your information for many years now.In line with the Apple Privacy update, Facebook came up with a tricky assault against Apple, taking full-page advertisements in print daily papers. It blamed Apple of imperiling little businesses and putting hazards on the web.
The recent disclosure of data has forced Facebook to act beyond how it usually does. As Apple clarified, any app engineer can still track clients and collect data, regardless of any app protection mechanism. The protection tools that Apple offers don't put a halt to any of that. They constrain companies like Facebook to reveal everything they collect. It is inevitable to collect user data. However, it is just as important to be transparent about the nature and amount of data that one collects from users. For Apple, this is what Facebook fails to do. This is not the first time that Facebook has encountered privacy issues.
Data Comparison from Signal, iMessage, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger
Upon examination below, you will realize how much information messenger gets compared to other apps. Facebook obviously collects an unnerving sum of information when compared to the other three. Whatsapp, although owned by Facebook does not even store that much of user data. That's likely since the app is end-to-end encrypted, so Facebook's powers are more limited.
Signal and iMessage offer the same assurance for users, with the latter being Apple's own app, the default informing app on the iPhone and iPad. Signal offers the leading assurance, as indeed Apple collects a few client information. Information coming from 9to5Mac below shows the privacy labels and a comparison of data being collected by several chat apps which includes Signal, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger.
Facebook messenger is yet to respond to all of these accusations from different privacy security app makers and Facebook messenger users.
