Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk is said to be pushing Tesla to have more in-car games and entertainment as he sees it is important, especially in a self-driving future.

Elon Musk on Tesla's future feature

Last week, Tesla has pushed a new software update that Musk hyped up as fire over the past few days. The software updated ended up consisting of a few changes to the user interfaces and the main new features were 3 new in-car video games and a new Boombox feature to play sounds through the car's external speakers.

After the software update, Musk followed it up by commenting about in-car video games and entertainment, which he stated as important when achieving autonomous driving. Musk said on December 28 that entertainment will be critical when the cars drive themselves.

Musk announced on Twitter that Tesla would be bringing an online multiplayer version of one of the games that they released during the update and he asked his followers what Tesla should do with it once self-driving is achieved.

Currently, the in-car video games of Tesla are only playable when the car is parked. The CEO received a lot of suggestions, including cloud gaming platforms such as Stadia.

Although some have praised him for his ideas, there were those who criticized him for focusing so much on the future features when self-driving cars are not even possible yet.

Musk has previously predicted that Tesla will have a million robotaxis by the end of 2020, but that has not been pushed through yet. Musk's interest in video games is more than just in his tweets.

As reported by Fred Lambert from Electrek, Tesla has a team of software engineers that are working on video games in Seattle, and they are now starting to develop a similar team in Austin, Texas.

The public's reaction on Tesla's feature

Musk's tweet about adding an in-gaming feature on Tesla to prepare for self-driving has drawn some backlash. Not only did he fail to release robotaxis, most netizens pointed out that the feature is not needed as people can play games, stream movies and TV shows and listen to music on their phones and tablets.

Some netizens also pointed out that even though a car can drive itself, the ones in the driver's seat will still need to pay attention and navigate the vehicle from time to time in case something goes wrong. Drivers should still be attentive in the wheel.

The public is now saying that the billionaire is getting ahead of himself. Back in 2019, Musk promised a million robotaxis before 2020 ends. Although he stated he missed the mark before, he said he was confident that Tesla can launch his plans.

Musk also stated that Tesla will release vehicles with no wheels or pedals in 2022, according to CNBC. Musk has based all of his optimism on the amount of data that his company was able to get from the vehicles that were on the road during the Tesla Autonomy Investor Day in Palo Alto, California last year.
