Elon Musk's Tesla German Gigafactory is having an issue against lizards. This creepy crawlies could bring a major issue in the factory's construction.
On Friday, Dec. 18, a German factory issued an order that forbids Tesla from chopping down trees. Why? Because these are home to hibernating sand lizards.
Authorities explained that the creatures would not survive the clearance process once Tesla started it. Although the court noted that Tesla already made efforts to accommodate the protected species by capturing them and moving them to other locations, the authorities explained that the male lizards are still hibernating in their winter dens.
According to Business Insider's latest report, the German court also said that their moving efforts are still not enough to protect the lizard population. However, the court still has not clarified if the order will impact the Tesla factory's completion.
Other environmental issues that Tesla previously faced
CNBC's previous report stated that Tesla also faced that Elon Musk's company also had an issue about snakes. A German environmental authority previously orders the electric car manufacturer to suspend its activity to build its first European factory in Brandenburg, Germany.
They wanted to make sure that Tesla would make efforts to save the hibernating snakes and lizards in the area. The first one to report the court's order is Tagesspiegel, a German newspaper.
This delay was the second success of environmental groups in Germany. Previously, Tesla also agreed to the activists' demands by reducing its water consumption at its new plant by more than a third.
Tesla also previously had problems with bats
Aside from snakes and lizards, Tesla also had problems with bats. In November 2019, conservationists warned that the factory's construction could endanger local bat species. Because of the brought up issue, Tesla had to agree again with the demands of local environmentalist groups. These include the Green League and NABU, which filed the concerns with the court about hibernating lizards.
