As the new year approaches, a lot of experts have been predicting what we may see in the next 12 months. In the tech world, there are gadgets and devices that will trend and will shape the tech industry.
Advances in artificial intelligence and financial technology are common as both are fast- growing and their impacts will definitely be felt across the industries. But there are other areas in the tech field that might make headlines.
Working from home will stay
The coronavirus pandemic has pushed so many people to start working from the comfort of their own home, making video conferencing apps such as Zoom and Skype one of the most unexpected boost in 2020.

It is clear that even if things slowly get back to normal next year, there will now be a shift to remote work as a permanent change or people will meet at the office less and less especially since it was proven that working remotely is just as effective as meeting face to face.
According to OnPay, around 65% of small businesses stated that they plan to support a form of work from home after the pandemic, and it is a 21% increase from the start of 2020.
Ransomware attacks will increase
Industry experts have predicted that 2021 may not be a good year for every CISO because there is an expected increase in ransomware attacks, both from nation states and hackers.
This prediction came from Michael Rezek, the Vice President of cybersecurity strategy at network performance analytics company Accedican.
So what is the solution to this? Network detection and response solutions or NDR can help. As for smaller companies who won't have the proper resources, they could stick with managed security services like managed defense and response.
5G still won't take off in 2021
5G is something that people are anticipating for a long time but for some reason, it never comes. Industry experts warned that it may still soar in 2021.
According to Bismarck Lepe, the founder and CEO at Wizeline, that 2021 will be an evolution for 5G but it will not be a revolution. Although 5G has a slow takeover, we will see a massive rise in 5G trial initiatives by enterprise next year, as predicted by Vinay Ravuri, the CEO of EdgeQ, especially in energy, manufacturing and surveillance.
Solar PV tech will be a hit
Solar photovoltaic technology or Solar PV, will have a record-breaking year both in the United States and in other countries, according to Joshua M. Pearce, Ph.D., of Michigan Technological University.
According to Pearce, the PV costs have dropped so far that the majority of businesses, households and utilities can profit by installing PV. A study published in MDPI showed everyone would save money installing solar PV.
Also, a new study that will be published in 2021 shows the value of solar PV and that it is higher than the net metering rate throughout the United States. This means that it benefits everyone the more solar is distributed on the grid.
A new and more energy-efficient solar cells called black silicon cell can absorb even more solar energy and it is poised to further push the industry towards success. The solar industry already employs five times more workers than the coal industry and the year 2021 looks like a promising year for solar.
