While things are getting heated up due to the South China Sea and the ongoing pandemic, John Radcliffe, the Director of National Defence has revealed what is thought of China as of the moment.
Chinese biotechnology
According to his statement to the Wall Street Journal, he stated that Beijing now intends to dominate not just the United States but the whole planet in terms of technology, economics, and military. It was stated that most of China's major public initiatives as well as prominent companies all offer just one layer of camouflage towards the activities made by the Chinese Communist Party.
This allegedly comes after the official British government has just announced that the tech company called Huawei, which is known to have certain close ties to the Chinese state, would not be able to play a role when it came to building the UK's very own 5G network due to security concerns. Concerns have already been raised regarding China's Belt and Road Initiative, which is a project of investment in about 70 countries that critics note as an intent to strengthen China's global trade control.
Chinese human testing
Ratcliffe then continued by saying the United States intelligence actually shows that China was even conducting human testing on certain members of the People's Liberation Army. This was done in hopes of developing certain soldiers that possess biologically enhanced capabilities. Radcliffe then stated that there are currently no ethical boundaries when it came to Beijing's own pursuit of power. Ratcliffe, however, did not elaborate the true nature of the tests. His office is still yet to release further details with regards to the tests
According to NBC News, academics have previously spoken about the known Chinese ambitions to be able to improve soldier's performance on the given battlefield with the use of genetic modification. Just last year, a particular research paper was published that outlines plans by China said to apply biotechnology in order to enhance its military.

Chinese modern biotechnology
The paper read that while the potential of being able to leverage gene editing in order to increase the human capabilities on the future battlefield currently seems only hypothetically possible, there are actually a few indicators that show that the Chinese military researchers are now starting to explore this potential.
The paper had also quoted a particular Chinese general who spoke back in 2017 about "modern biotechnology" having revolutionary influences upon both the weapons and equipment as well as the combat space, military theories, and also the forms of warfare. The story was reported by The Sun and it is still unclear as to how far Chinese biotechnology has gone when it comes to their soldiers. There is also no estimated expectation mentioned regarding how far Chinese technology has been able to accomplish in terms of soldier enhancement.
