Film Director Werner Herzog Criticizes Elon Musk's Plan on Creating a City on Mars

By now, it's not a secret that Elon Musk and his private spaceflight company SpaceX is planning on bringing humans to Mars in the foreseeable future, preferably by the mid-2020s, but lately, the eccentric billionaire has also shared this plans on creating a Martian city.

Herzog's View of Musk's Ambitious Plan

In a previous report by Tech Times, Musk said that the Martian city's first population would be living under glass domes at first while the planet is being "terraformed to support life."

Furthermore, the SpaceX CEO said that while terraforming the planet to support life will be "too slow to be relevant in our lifetime," he guarantees that there will be an established human base in the Red Planet in this lifetime.

By 2050, there will be one million people living in the Martian City under glass domes, as per Musk.

While many are excited about how this will pan out, famed film director Werner Herzog criticized Musk's plan on bringing a million people to create a human base on Mars, saying that the plan was "an obscenity" and people should "not be like locusts," according to Inverse.

The interview with Herzog was conducted earlier this month during the premiere of a new documentary.

Martian Plans a 'Mistake'

In the interview, the German film director compared the tech CEO's plan to the rise and fall of communism and fascism in the 20th century, saying that the 21st century will "quickly" end the "technological utopia like colonizing Mars."

Nevertheless, Herzog isn't entirely against going to Mars.

In fact, he said that he does want to visit the Red Planet with a camera and a group of scientists, but the latter part of Musk's plan is "a mistake."

According to Herzog, the problem is that humanity should be focusing on making our planet habitable instead of colonizing another one, and to top it all of, Mars is not a habitable planet as it does not have liquid water on the surface, which is necessary to support life.

Furthermore, the film director said that the solar winds in the Red Planet would fry people like a microwave.

Musk Responds to Criticisms

Nevertheless, the SpaceX chief was unbothered by all the criticisms of his plans, responding to them and citing research suggesting that there is water on Mars in the Korolev Crater and that the planet only "needs a warmup" on his past tweet.

Musk also cited another research from 1993 as evidence when he shared his plans to warm up the planet and release carbon dioxide.

According to the CEO, humans would be able to walk around Mars with only a breathing apparatus.

"I think Elon Musk stylizes himself as some sort of a technological visionary," the film director said. "Because he has to sell his electric cars, wonderful that he does that. He has to sell his reusable rockets. Wonderful that he's doing it. But I disagree with him when he postulates and preaches about colonizing Mars."

Scientists and other prominent figures have long voiced their concerns over Musk's plans, saying instead that we should all focus our efforts on saving our planet.
