The known Super Smash Bros. tournament called The Big House has now officially been cancelled after Nintendo recently issued its cease and desist order. The announcement was broken down by the event organizers on Twitter stating that Nintendo of America had ordered the game's tournament to be cancelled due to its particular use of mods.
Super Smash Bros: The Big House tournament cancelled
The Big House is known as a US Smash Bros tournament has faithfully been taking place every single year starting back in 2011. This year's strict online-only event was then set to have fans all brawling in the popular Nintendo Switch title as the Smash Bros Ultimate, and the popular GameCube release known as the Smash Bros Melee.
The latter currently does not really have a given online mode. The Big House was originally planning on running the whole game using the classic GameCube as well as the Wii emulator known as Dolphin. This would be able to allow all of the organizers to officially run the fan-made software. This software also included introducing the online functionality coming from the Slippi mod.
Original Plan: The Big House December 4 to 6
The use of this particular tech might actually seem to be the whole core of the problem that Nintendo is experiencing with the entire event according to an article by vg247. The Big House was originally set to happen between December 4 and 6 before it announced its cancellation.
The event organizers announced on Twitter that they were informed that they no longer have the permission to be able to host or even broadcast the long awaited event. This was primarily due to certain people using Slippi. It was also stated that all of the competitions are now affected because of that.

Nintendo protects its IP
It was stated that the event organizers were now forced to comply with the official order to cancel the long awaited The Big House Online for both the Ultimate and the Melee. The refund information, as announced, are also going to be sent much shortly and the organizers apologize to all of those that were impacted.
According to the article by vg247, Nintendo is actually pretty aggressive when it all boils down to protecting its own IP. In the more recent years, the platform holder has been issuing a number of cease and desist orders to certain fan projects just like the prolific leakers Like Sabi as well as the Metroid 2 remake Project AM2R.
This protective move by Nintendo, although disappointing to some of the fans, is the company's best way of protecting its IP. The company is not that open to modifications made within their games and prefer them to be played as they were originally designed to be played. With that said, it's now quite peculiar as what the future of Nintendo events would look like without mods.
