Tesla's Electric Vehicles, particularly the Model S, are now strolling around Fremont, California as police squad cars after passing the department's test spanning for over a year since its initial debut last January 2019. The Fremont Police Department bought second-hand 2014 Tesla Model S units last 2018, which the lawmen initially subjected to rigorous testing.
The Palo Alto-based electric vehicle manufacturing company's Model S is now joining another public service industry that aims to protect the streets of California using Tesla EVs. Fremont's Police Department is turning over internal combustion engines (ICE), which were the police's initial choice.
Fremont Police: Squad Cars are going Electric with Tesla Model S
According to Electrek, the Fremont Police Department was initially sporting 2007 Dodge Chargers before the Tesla EV update reigned over the lawmen. The police are now venturing to more environmental-friendly options, which Tesla represents with its EVs.
The country is in the transitioning period where electric vehicles are more apparent on streets and are having a face-off with ICE cars that mainly rely on gas or fuel. Several industries are leaning towards the transition to electric vehicles, particularly the ride-hailing scene, with Taxi Cabs, Uber, Lyft, etc. going electric by 2030.
The police squad cars are also looking over to transition, with Fremont leading the charge to adopt second-hand Tesla Model S as part of its fleet and company. Tesla's Model S gets a cosmetic upgrade starting with police decals, bumper bullbars, and the standard blue and red lights with sirens.
Transitioning to electric vehicles is beneficial due to its nature of carrying the latest technology that the car industry can offer. Additionally, electric vehicles prove themselves to be more environmental-friendly against ICE cars that mainly rely on fuels that contribute to greenhouse gasses that are penetrating the ozone layer.
Tesla Model S: Fremont Police's Review and Report of EVs as Squad Cars
The 2014 Tesla Model S EVs were initially bought by the Fremont Police Department in 2018 but only began its police patrol testing by January 2019. After another year of usage, Fremont Police is now issuing another report that focuses on the Tesla EV's reliability as a police squad car.
According to the City of Fremont Police Department's "Electric Patrol Vehicle Pilot Program," there are significant changes and differences that the users saw in the transition from ICE vehicles towards electric cars. The department's upgrade came from a "Gas Ford PPV."
The 2014 Model S costs $61,478.50 right off the chart, while Ford's PPV only costs $40,500. The old Model S only has an 85 kWh battery that can run 265 miles on a single full charge while the ICE has 344 miles on its 18.6-liter tank capacity.
The most significant difference is the annual fuel costs, which Tesla tops by only costing $1,036 for charging and electric consumption while the Gas Ford Squad Car has $5,133 per vehicle, for a $3 per gallon price. Fremont Police reports that it saved a massive $4,000 for the entire year it used the EV.
Additionally, the Average Fuel and Maintenance costs $2,000 less than the Gas Ford PPV with $8,048 while Tesla only consumed $5,901. The Tesla Model S considerably gives more savings to the department compared to ICE cars.
