Xbox Kinect gave players a preview of the future. Engadget reported that the gaming device was first launched in 2010. Microsoft produced another two versions after seven years but stopped making new ones.
Why? Because the tech giant manufacturer found out that people are quite okay with handheld controllers. According to Hackaday's latest report, gamers are immediately getting used to PlayStation and Xbox's new consoles.
Although Kinect quickly lost its spotlight, the product's success at giving a depth camera to consumer price levels still provided many ideas that were previously impossible.
Kinect proved that there is still a market for depth camera peripherals, leading to Intel RealSense and other plug-and-play devices.
Kinect's technology also helped the automobile industry
Although Kinect didn't have the future in the gaming industry, it still found another job with Microsoft's HoloLens AR headset. Its technology also helped the upcoming wave of drones and autonomous cars.
These vehicles are expected to use depth sensors; some might even be equipped with the latest sensor to wear Kinect. Aside from camera sensors, Microsoft's device also has one of the earliest microphone arrays sold to consumers.
Previously, these were exclusive to expensive corporate room speakerphones. However, Kinect's microphone now only forms the core of inexpensive home assistants, such as Amazon Echo Dot.
Can you play Kinect games on Xbox Series X or S?
PureXbox explained that Kinect games wouldn't even load on Xbox Series X or S. Players must use Xbox One to play them. In October 2019, Microsoft announced that all Xbox One Games would be backward compatible with the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
Games that require the Kinect peripheral will also not work on the new model of consoles. Some of the users are not happy with the update.
"It saddens me that Kinect is being consigned to the scrapheap of gaming history like this. It had some good games!" said Kantaroo, one of the commentators in the blog post.
"I suppose it's for the same reason that Nintendo didn't give us any Virtual Boy on 3DS virtual console. They'd rather people forgot it ever existed," he added.
