Facebook might be stepping on Nextdoor's turf with a brand new feature for the popular social media app that will help users be able to connect with the people who live near them. This feature will be called Neighborhoods and it will allow users to display local posts, groups, and also marketplace items.
Facebook Neigborhoods: How the news broke out to the public
This news was confirmed by a Facebook spokesperson posting the information on Twitter some time Tuesday. Matt Navarra was the person responsible for breaking the news out about Facebook's possible next move.
According to the statement, the Facebook spokesperson said that more than ever, there are people using Facebook in order to participate with their own local communities. The feature is said to help make it easier for people to do this.
The limited test of the upcoming Neighborhoods feature is on its way
It was announced that Facebook is rolling out a quite limited test of Neighborhoods, which is a dedicated space positioned within Facebook to help people connect with other people living near them.
It was said that users will be able to switch Neighborhoods, and also have dedicated privacy options in order to properly manage activity within the group. This was based on the information provided by Matt Navara on his Twitter page.
Facebook Neighborhoods Vs Nextdoor
In an article by CNet, the feature is said to be quite similar to the known Nextdoor, which is currently a community-focused type of social network that has already amassed 27 million active users monthly. Nextdoor was previously founded back in 2011 and the company states that its mission is to be able to help neighborhoods in the creation of both stronger as well as safer communities.
There were no additional details that immediately cleared out just how many users will be involved in Facebook's testing for the new feature or even when or if it will then be released to a much wider social network.
Facebook has also cautioned that the known feature is currently only in its testing phase so the company will be able to get the sufficient feedback and be able to make the necessary changes.

Facebook's other involvements
Facebook has been gaining ideas from different applications as the social media has been getting bigger and bigger with every additional feature that it puts both on the website and on its mobile app.
Aside from just features within the social media platform itself, Facebook has also been working with its Instagram by making it even more compatible with Facebook itself. Another one of Facebook's moves is its React which aims to help make the programming process much easier for developers and programmers alike.
