Tesla promises to bring to the market its humongous electric truck by early 2021. However, GMC rolls out its first electric pickup truck, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV, which is seen to compete against the highly-anticipated Cybertruck.
In 2010, GM closed the Hummer, but is resurrecting the iconic brand with a zero-emission super electric truck. Since February, GMC has been teasing about its battery-powered truck and initially planned its reveal on May 20. However, due to the pandemic, the unveiling was pushed back to October 20.
2022 GMC Hummer EV
While it continued to expose bits of info about the EV truck over the past months, GMC already revealed the full information about its new pickup. The Hummer EV is a pickup truck that is completely electric with "unprecedented off-road capability."
Specs and features
Among the head-turning Hummer EV specs include 1,000 horsepower, CrabWalk mode, a removable roof, a 350-mile range as well as its exceptional off-road capabilities. But of course, the truck offers more than these.
GMC prides that the Hummer EV is the "world's first zero emissions, zero limits all-electric supertruck." It tri-motor system generates over and above power and technology needed to confidently conquer the off-road track. It is packed with 1,000 horsepower and allows for a seamless 0 to 60 mph in just about three seconds or less. GMC also claims that the truck can get about 100 miles of drive with just 10 minutes of charging.
Owners can also choose features like crab walk or extract mode. The crab-walk allows the truck to travel diagonally while extract mode lifts the truck by six inches when needed.
Great infotaiment
To provide great entertainment, Epic Games' Unreal Engine powers the truck's 13.4-inch central screen and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. This is the same design used in Epic's popular video game Fortnite. GMC also touts "premium, technical materials" used in the Hummer's interiors, although the details about them are quite limited.
Infinity roof
The top-of-the-line model features the Infinity Roof, which consists of four removable and transparent Sky Panels that can be easily tucked away in the truck's huge frunk. Also, the central I-bar can be removed as well while the rear window can roll down electrically. The Infinity Roof provides an open-air feel which provides best off-road experience. It was a non-negotiable feature when the Hummer is being developed.
Super Cruise
Hummer EV will have the super cruise technology that allows "hands-free driving" for more than 200,000 miles and allows the new automated lane change. Although GMC has been mum about Hummer's other active-safety features, but the Super Cruise may be a prelude to other like automated features like blind-spot monitor and emergency brakes.
GMC Hummer EV Price
GMC Hummer EV price starts at $80,000 for the base trim, which can easily compete with other electric pickups including Rivian, Lordstown Motors, and of course, Tesla's Cybertruck.
However, the base trim will not yet be available until 2024 as GM decided to launch the Hummer EV with Edition 1, the pickup's top-of-the-line version, for the entire 2022 model.
The Edition 1 is sweetly priced at $112,595 and comes only with single specs: white paint with "Lunar Horizon" interiors, 350-mile driving range, infinity roof, and other unique features. It is currently GM's most expensive car.
