United Airlines and the United States' Department of Defense recently concluded an extensive study that confirms wearing face maks the whole time ensures passengers' safety on air travel. Flights are now on the low risk of the spectrum regarding COVID-19 transmission.
"COVID-19 is almost non-existent on our flights," boasted by airline commercial transport company, United Airlines, in a Twitter post that marks the end of their study. The international airline transport company assures its future customers of the safety of traveling, even on long flights.
According to Fox 13's recent report, face masks can significantly reduce the risk of traveling through airplanes, across states or countries, having a low risk of transmitting the SARS-CoV 2 virus. The company's study involved the US Department of Defense to look into the effects and further validate the company's claims.
United Airlines: Our Flights are Safe from COVID-19
One of America's major airlines delved into the study to prove its flights to be safe from the global pandemic. United Airlines' research aims to reopen commercial flights among the public who are doubtful or fearful of catching COVID-19 from air travel.
According to United Airlines' recently posted video on Twitter (@united), following proper safety guidelines, including securing one's face mask throughout the flight, significantly eradicates the risk of COVID-19 transmission in a plane. While the risk is not entirely eliminated, the possibility of contracting it from air travels is low. United Airlines determines a 0.003 percent chance of the SARS-CoV2-infected air particles to cross one's breathing zone. This number is a relatively low percentage of the virus present in an environment. Not to mention that airplanes have compressed air that circulates its vents.
Dept. of Defense and United's: COVID-19 Can be Stopped by Face Masks on Flights
The study entitled "TRANSCOM/AMC Commercial Aircraft Cabin Aerosol Dispersion Tests" by the US Department of Defense and United Airlines recently published online says that face masks are enough to protect one's self in an air flight.
This study also looked at the risks on long flights, particularly international travel, to debunk the fears and established theories that put airline companies in an unfavorable light. After multiple tests, United and DoD conclude that even "long haul" flights show low risks of catching COVID-19.
The two bodies' research even tested this on full flights, having all seats occupied by its "dummy participants." Full capacity airplanes should not be feared by the public, according to United Airlines, as face masks are enough to stem the transmission on air travel.
DoD notes that a person would only catch an "infectuous dose" of the virus if they are seated beside a COVID-positive patient for atleast 54 hours of flight.
