Although not as surprising as it could have been, after about 20 years, Yahoo has finally decided to bring down its very own Yahoo Groups this coming December. The news was reported by Gizmodo and although it is not that surprising since it's been a while that this social platform has been used, it still signifies the truth of technology as the older platforms are being replaced by the newer ones.
The said platform works by allowing users to interact in an interesting series of different discussion boards. During the recent years, it's actually become quite a relic with a number of users that are jumping ship to yet other online discussion boards just like Reddit, Facebook Groups, and also Google Groups.
Yahoo acknowledges that the platform will finally be shut down
Yahoo has also acknowledged that the recent decision to finally end the said service actually comes as the company tries to shift their focus on many of their other properties. It is also said to be a two-stage disconnect from different users: the site actually halted any incoming new groups on October 12, with all of the past content scheduled to be removed on December 14. The final date of the shutdown will be on December 15.
Once the doors have finally been shut, users will no longer be able to access any one of its services or even any and all forms of actual email communication. Yahoo is currently encouraging all of the remaining members in order to move onto yet another message board and also keep their whole online discussion still going.
How Yahoo Groups came to be once popular and how it survived
The service actually survived through a particular re-branding that happened back in 2009. This said re-branding altered the platform's ability to be able to post new discussions into a sort of mailing list. However, this was still not enough to be able to keep the whole lights on for the known platform with a number of users still continuing to drop off.
The service was previously created back in 2001, the known Yahoo Groups was also one of the very first discussion boards that actually allowed the users to be able to connect with each other interestingly over their shared love of pop culture. Users were even given the liberty to create their very own digital community but the previous users have then moved on.
Just similarly, Yahoo Messenger also shut down back in 2018 according to an article by Slash Gear. Although it might actually be the end of the known Yahoo Groups, Vorizon still promises to focus their efforts on the more high profile platforms all under the esteemed Yahoo belt in order to actually deliver the very best content available for users.
