Rapper Logic Paid $220,000 for a Charizard Pokemon Card in Online Auction

An online auction event certainly had a great auction day as it sold a Pokémon Charizard Card last Saturday, October 10, for more than $220,000 including the buyer's premium.

The Iconic Auctions had on sale a first-edition shadowless holographic Charizard #4 from 199, which was on gem-mint condition. From the starting bid of $40,000, the bid was raised to as much as $183,812 as retired rapper Logic outbid the others after 17 bids for the item.

Including the 20% buyer's premium, the rapper-turned-Twitch streamer paid a total amount of more than $220,000. It was the highest known amount paid for a Charizard card.

With the current condition of the card, it was graded gem mint 10 by PSA, a card grading company. It is extremely difficult to find this card in such a good condition since it is an early Pokémon card which was used in play. At that time, no one knew it would become such a valuable collectible item.

How Twitter-verse reacted to Logic's purchase

Logic shared on Twitter that he won the bid. "I'm the one at the auction for 183k Lololol," he tweeted.

While he received congratulatory from other Twitter users who share the love for Pokémon cards, of course, others have raised eyebrows on the rapper's recent purchase. A Twitter user Anthony compared Logic's buying decision with other rappers'.

"Every other rapper: spend 183k on chains; Bobby: spend 183k on pokémon cards," he said. Another user said he would rather spend the money on something else. "Gonna be honest... wouldn't want my merch money to go to anything else," he tweeted.

Logic shared on his Instagram account his love for Pokémon cards since he was a kid. In a post shared on October 11, he was unboxing a 1999 base set booster box, which he paid for $23,000.Since he cannot afford to buy a card then, he even tried trading food stamps for a card. Now, as he has grown and saved "every penny he has made," he is trying to enjoy something that he love doing since childhood.

"Being able to enjoy something that I've loved since childhood now as a grown man is like buying back a piece of something I could never have, it's not about the material it's about the experience," Logic explained. The short video already got more than 700,000 views in one day since posting.

Logic signs exclusive contract with Twitch

Back in July, Logic signed an exclusive deal with Twitch, although it was unclear whether the contract was for streaming music or games. In an interview with The Verge, the rapper said that he was "not this rapper guy," but a nerd who loves video games.

Logic hopes to take his fans with him to the platform, which he believes was the safest way to interact and communicate with them.

However, the rapper clarified that he will not be having online political debates on the platform. "I'm going to be on Twitch, helping people after they've had a day of protesting or political debates, unwind and laugh and smile," he noted.
