E.gg aims to recapture the atmosphere of the early web. Facebook designed that "About" section of the new weird app to look like an old-school Geocities website page. Users can also find a GIF of the old 3D animated Oogachacka dancing baby, which is the first viral hit of the internet world. "We started working on E.gg after a few of us found ourselves missing a certain raw and exploratory spirit that was so emblematic of The Early Internet," wrote the developers.

"Sure, it was clumsy to use -- dangerous at times," they added.

However, the developers explained that although the new app was an awkward mess, there is a weird and enlivening bazaar of manically-blinking GIFs, personal webpages, passionate guestbook entries made by people who cared deeply about their niche interest. The developers and other people involved in making the app wanted simply to carve out their own digital space.

Facebook's new update can be used to create mixed-media pages for fansites or an about page for their own app, as well as create collages. Once E.gg is launched, it can be used to create a "canvas" filled with texts, GIFs, and pictures, which can be placed anywhere on the page and choosing a URL for the creation.

The Daily Dot reported that there are some people who didn't appreciate the new app of Facebook. Many users on Twitter were able to notice that the E.gg app can give the Geocities vibes, which is the popular web hosting service that was taken down in 2009.

But, there are also some people who criticized the new app for failing to provide attribution for prominently-featured work.

"I literally see one of my gifs in this with no credit. What the fuck are you people doing?" tweeted Pasquale D'Silva in reply to another tweet showing the new app's design.

The concern of Pasquale was acknowledged by Jason Toff from NPE, saying that E.gg uses another Facebook-owned site called Giphy, to gather different content. Jason also stated that the NPE team will work to improve E.gg for better attribution. You can check further updates and Facebook's new weird E.gg app at TechTimes.
