BlackPink defeats BTS
These world records have surpassed the previous record-holder, BTS, also a K-pop group. Their video "Boy With Luv" featuring U.S.-based singer Hasley achieved these three records in April 2019 before being toppled by Blackpink.
Other titleholders of the record include Ariana Grande's "thank u, next" with more than 50 million views, "Look What You Made Me Do" by Taylor Swift at 43 million views, and a previous single from Blackpink, "Kill This Love" at 56 million views.
"How You Like That" is the first single of Blackpink since "Kill This Love." The Korean girl group is comprised of Lisa, Rose, Jennie, and Jisoo.
Not only that, but the live premiere of "How You Like That" garnered 1.66 million peak concurrent viewers, also equivalent to Guinness World Records. These include being declared with the most viewers for a video premiere on YouTube, and most viewers of a music video premiere on this video platform.
One of their recent collaborations is with Lady Gaga in the track called "Sour Candy," which hit the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The girl group is currently also the most followed girl group on Spotify and YouTube, beating One Direction.
BlackPink facing controversies
Days after the music video launch, controversies surrounded the latest single from Blackpink. It allegedly contained offensive images of Ganesha, an Indian deity. Could there be something about this if they only featured the Indian god?
Those who studied the video expressed that the way Ganesha appeared seemed offensive and disrespectful of the culture.
YG Entertainment, the company that manages Blackpink, has already made changes and edited out the Lord Ganesha symbol from the video. They sought permission from YouTube since the video is already out, Republic World reported.
Many of the clamors came from the fans who pointed out religious disrespect, particularly of the Hindu deities, and tweeted YG Entertainment to take action. The hashtags #Ganesha and #YGapologise trended on Twitter, as fans also decided to email the management.
