'How to Get Away with Murder' Finally Comes to an End; Here's Why the Show is Canceled

The murder mystery series "How to Get Away with Murder" comes to an end as Season 6 will start airing on ABC on May 14. This follows an announcement made back in July 2019 that the show was officially ending, and was the day after its producer, Shonda Rhimes, left ABC to sign a deal with Netflix.

It was the right time to end the show

According to Newsweek, one of the main reasons that the highly watched ABC series is ending is because Pete Nowalk, the show's showrunner decided that it was the right time to end the series.

Nowalk said in a statement, "Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do-as it did here. For me, Annalise Keating's (played by Viola Davis) journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings is a gift rarely given to a series creator."

He also told TV Guide, "What I'm just excited about is this show should have an ending. The storyline, any good mystery, you answer as many of the questions as you can-and I'm going to try to answer as many as I can."

Decreasing ratings might have caused the show to end as well

After the cancelation of the series was first announced, The Hollywood Reporter, as told by Newsweek, said that the show also fell victim to a decrease in ratings, especially with Season 4 and Season 5 which had double digital declines when it came to viewership.

However, they also reported that the show actually has solid ratings as they have very strong delayed viewing figures due to people choosing to binge-watch the series after they all air.

The Season 6 cast have also all reached the end of their 6-year contracts according to THR, and it felt like the perfect time to end the series as Season 7 and beyond would be more expensive to produce.

When it came to the fan's expectations for the series finale, Nowalk said "You can assume anything from death to prison, escape, or more. Every character's going to have a different ending; some that they choose, and some that they don't."

Everyone has mixed feelings about the series ending as fans took it to social media like Twitter to express their thoughts on the show.

"How to Get Away with Murder" will air its series finale Season 6 on May 14 at 10 pm ET on ABC.
