SyFy is returning to its hard science fiction roots with recent shows like Ascension, and you can get an extended preview of the network's latest series, 12 Monkeys, right now.
Based on the Terry Gilliam film of the same name, which starred Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, 12 Monkeys partly takes place in a future where mankind has been decimated by a deadly plague. In order to give humanity a second chance, a man named Cole goes back in time to 2015 using a dangerous and untested method of time travel. There he attempts to change humanity's fate by eradicating the source of the plague before it goes on to kill more than 90 percent of the human race.
Intrigued? Look no further then, because you can watch the first 10 minutes of the show (courtesy of Yahoo) below right now and get a taste of what is to come.
This is a fascinating tale ripe for a television series to expand upon. However, the main problem seems to be that Gilliam's style of humor is completely missing, replaced with a colder tone that makes it seem as if the show is maybe trying a little too hard to make sure viewers take it 100 percent seriously.
Showrunners have already discussed how the show will be much different from the movie. That's a given, considering that this adaptation is a television show. The characters will be expanded upon and parts of the story explored in different ways. If nothing else, the actor who portrays Cole definitely has the "I'm a crazy time traveler" vibe down. Let's hope SyFy can deliver.
