According to a blog post on the Discord website, the chat service for gamers will now be adding a new feature to its platform called "noise suppression" in beta as part of their partnership with Krisp.ai.
Discord Beta unveils new background noise suppression in voice chat feature
This feature will begin rolling out to all desktop users today, April 11. It will detect and remove all kinds of background noise so users of the platform can now be heard more clearly.
Discord wrote in their post that "Have a vacuum running in the background; slam a door; ruffle a bag of chips; keep using your really loud keyboard your friends complain about. They won't be able to hear it,"
Although the new feature is still in beta, that doesn't mean that users will have to wait for an official invite to test it. It is now considered a live feature.
It will only pop up when you enter a voice chat channel. Once you do, users will receive a prompt that will explain how the new feature works. It will also have its very own button for users to toggle in order to switch it on or off.
"It's difficult to control sounds happening around you. As people are choosing to work, study, and hang at home on Discord, we would like to help everyone who may be stuck in a non-ideal situation," as said in their blog post. "Today we're rolling out a new noise suppression feature early in beta in partnership with Krisp.ai."
Large number of users have caused strains to the system
As more people are staying indoors due to social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic, many chat and video services have experienced a heavy strain on their systems, Discord has been one of them.
They previously experienced a handful of widespread service outages which took a lot of their communities offline. During the outage, the company said that they are currently investigating issues where a number of servers were completely unavailable. The outage lasted for more than an hour after Discord revealed that capacity was increased worldwide by more than 20% to help users connect more smoothly with others.
Discord is still working on rolling out this new feature on its mobile application. For now, it remains available only for desktop users. You may need to exit the application and restart if it doesn't show up on your PC version.
Users can toggle Krisp in their Settings under "App Settings," "Voice and Video," "Advanced," and then "Noise Suppression."
Users can know more about how this newly added noise suppression feature works through the company's Help Center.
