Experiencing slow internet speed? Honey, you're not alone.

In the United States of America, a new report was released saying that 88 out of 200 most populous cities in the country currently experience slower internet speed compared ten weeks prior to the quarantine period. According to broadband analysis site BroadbandNow, network degradation significantly dropped up to 40 percent in all states-- highest among them happened in New York City with 24 percent decreased.

Let's admit it. Internet speed might not get back as quickly as it should be due to this deadly virus. However, there are things that you can do to make your internet faster.

As revealed by Ofcom, the United Kingdom's media regulator, there are common devices in our houses that can make your internet speed even slower than today. If you want to make it a little faster, try to pull out these devices while you make important online activities like taking video calls, watching HD videos, or downloading files.

One of these devices is the kitchen appliances like a microwave. As asked by Ofcom, "did you know that microwave ovens can also reduce wi-fi signals?" The signals from a microwave can somehow interfere with internet speed.

"So don't use the microwave when you're making video calls, watching HD videos or doing something important online," tipped by Ofcom.

TV, baby monitors, speakers, etc. can also affect your internet speed

Not only microwaves can interfere with your internet speed, but Ofcom also revealed that other electric devices like television, cordless phones, baby monitors, halogen lamps, dimmer switches, stereos, and speakers could have huge participation with the slow internet speed. These devices also caused interference with the signal of your internet-- making it slower.

BBC reported other tips including:

  • Position your internet router as far as possible from other devices that may interfere with the signal
  • If you're carrying out video calls or meetings, turn off the video and use less audio to make the internet faster
  • Keep your router switched on
  • Try starting those calls at less common times, rather than on the hour or half-hour
  • For the best broadband speeds, use an ethernet cable to connect your computer directly to your router rather than using wi-fi

"So we're encouraging people to read our advice on getting the most from their broadband, home phones, and mobiles - and to share it with friends, families, and colleagues, to help them stay connected too," she said.
