With Pokemon Sword and Shield out for quite a bit of time now, a good amount of people are done with the main storyline and are now playing with the game's side quests and other activities. Of course, multiplayer has been at the heart of the Pokémon franchise, and pro players and streamers have been looking for ways to break the game.
Players have hastily found new metas in competitive Pokémon, and have started researching and theory crafting other possible team compositions and ideal EVs for each Pokémon. However, not everyone finds fun in these things. Some players find fun in looking for shiny Pokémon, while others are looking for ways to have fun.
Pro Pokémon player WolfeyGlick exactly did that. In a now-viral clip on Twitter, WolfeyGlick was in a doubles battle with another trainer. In a perfectly captured moment, the video shows how his opponent fell into the hands of WolfeyGlick's antics.
His opponent used Dynamax, Sword and Shield's newest battle mechanic for upsizing his own Excadrill. Dynamax'ed Pokémon has increased stats and has super powerful moves. However, this can only be used once a battle. WolfeyGlick was able to predict his opponent's intentions and devised a plan to waste his opponent's Dynamax Pokémon.
First off, WolfeyGlick used two specific Pokémon for his trick. He used a combination of Grimsnarl and Sylveon to make sure his plan was foolproof. The turn before the clip is shown, he used Grimsnarl's Prankster ability. Prankster allows a Pokémon to use a status-move to have priority before anything else. This is an important setup, as WolfeyGlick's plan revolves around having priority. Then on the next turn, where the clip is shown, he commands his Grimsnarl to use Trick to give the Grimsnarl's equipped item, an Eject Button, to the opponent's Excadrill. Eject Button makes a Pokémon swap out if the Pokémon holding the item takes damage.
Afterward, he commands his Sylveon to make a Quick Attack. Since Sylveon is one of the fastest Pokémon out there, and quick attack makes sure that it's the first move done every turn (baring any other modifier or move set that takes priority), this guarantees that it'll be the first move to take place.
Another thing to note is that Dynamax takes priority before any move, so WolfeyGlick's opponent was able to Dynamax before any Pokémon used any move. But since it's a doubles battles, WolfeyGlick had to guess which one of the Pokémon's his opponent was using was going to get Dynamax'ed. Luckily, he guessed right as his opponent chose Excadrill. Once Excadrill Dynamax'ed, Grimsnarl was able to swap out his Eject Button, and was followed by Sylveon's Quick Attack. There was a 50% chance of it failing if WolfeyGlick chose the wrong Pokémon to target. Luckily, he picked right.
Going Viral
The clip went viral quickly, as it amassed over 629,000 views, 38,000 likes, and 15,600 comments on twitter as of writing. A longer clip, explaining the thought process and plan beforehand, was posted on YouTube. The video has over 90,000 views as of the moment and is one of the top trending videos for Pokémon for the day.
