Pokemon Global Link Shuts Down
On Tuesday, Nov. 26, the official website of Nintendo, a Japanese computer-games company that brought Pokemon, has revealed shocking news for all the fans of Pokemon video games. The Pokemon Global Link will soon stop in its services after quite some time of more than nine years. This means that all video games that are connected to the service will also have to say goodbyes such as Pokemon Sun, Pokemon Moon, Pokemon Ultra Sun, and Pokemon Ultra Moon.
On Feb. 24, 2020, the said closure of the service will take effect, and all games aligned with Global Link will soon be unavailable for all users.
"After more than nine years of operation, the Pokémon Global Link (PGL) service will be retired on February 24, 2020, at 23:59 UTC. After PGL service has ended, you will no longer be able to use any gameplay features that require a connection to the PGL on your Pokémon Ultra Sun, Pokémon Ultra Moon, Pokémon Sun, or Pokémon Moon games. You will still be able to use other online functionality apart from the PGL," said Nintendo in a statement.
Munna: 'A Thank You Gift' From Nintendo
However, a blessing in disguise might cheer you up even with this closure because players of these Pokemon games can have their free Fennel's Munna upon playing the game before the said date of closure.
In the anime, Munna was first seen in Dreams by the Yard Full!, wherein she was caught by Doctor Fennel. Until then, Munna was recognized as Fennel's Pokemon that helps her through her studies of Pokemon dreams—which was also the basis of Munna's name that meant 'dreams' in Japanese.
Munna's main abilities are hypnosis, dream eater, rest, and sleep talking. Though, for all the Pokemon fans out there, Munna freebie cannot replace the Pokemon Sun and Moon games. Nintendo still wishes gamers to understand their decision and said that Munna is a 'thank you gift' to represent the launching of Global Link back in 2010, which is the same year that Pokemon Black and White were also launched.
You Can Still Play Pokemon Sun and Moon Games, Here's How
Though Global Link is set to retire before the end of February next year, Pokémon Sun and Moon fans can still access their game—but with a different service of Pokémon Sword and Shield.
The only difference is that there will be no more rating battles and even online competitions in Sword and Shield, unlike in Global Link. Still, you can have individual trading and battles within your Pokémon Sun and Moon characters while having your free Fennel's Munna on the side.
"Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will provide services similar to the PGL's Rating Battles and Online Competitions features and will be available to play via Nintendo Switch."
