Mortal Kombat is a series known for its gory, over-the-top violence. Any slasher villain in a horror film would find themselves at home. Pennywise the Clown, for example, would be a perfect fit. Stephen King's scary clown might even end up in Mortal Kombat 11.
This is based on a tweet by Ed Boon, co-creator and director of the Mortal Kombat series. In the tweet, he posted a picture of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker beside Bill Skarsgård's Pennywise the Clown. Joker's pointing towards a far away location out of frame, seemingly giving the other clown directions.
Boon's tweet reads: "Just walk down this road, take a right at Mortal Kombat and ask for an application. I'm sure they'll take you." If Pennywise is good at navigating around, he'd find his way to Mortal Kombat just fine. However, Boon ended the tweet with a hashtag #PennywiseNotConfirmedJustHavingFun.
That's enough to dispel a lot of rumors, but the randomness of the tweet could make people's imaginations run wild. The tweet, after all, came out of nowhere. People could say that there must have been a reason to make a joke like that, even if it only meant a slight consideration of making Pennywise part of the game.
Pennywise the Clown, after all, came from the movie It, which is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 11 is published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. If all intellectual property rights are ironed out, Pennywise the Clown could definitely pay a visit to the different realms.
Unwelcome Guests
It's not out of character for Mortal Kombat to invite guests from other universes. When it threw the fourth wall out of the window and collaborated with DC for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe in 2008, the series has since seen countless guest appearances from other franchises.
The list includes other horror icons such as Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jason Voorhes from Friday the 13th, Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and the Alien and Predator from Alien and Predator, respectively.
Other guest characters include faces from other games, like Kratos from God of War, and film icons like Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator.
Perhaps what best gives credence on Boon's tweet is the inclusion of The Joker in the Mortal Kombat games. First appearing in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, The Joker will reappear in Mortal Kombat 11 via its first Kombat pack.
The Kombat pack contains five other characters aside from The Joker: Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, Terminator T-800, Sindel, and Image Comics' Spawn.
Although Boon is clearly joking and just having fun with his tweet, enough fan pressure could lead their team to actually consider including Pennywise the Clown in future Mortal Kombat games, if not in Mortal Kombat 11. However, as of this writing, there are no official indications that we'll be seeing the evil clown creature doing fatalities on our home consoles.
