Facebook Working On A TV Streaming Device With A Camera, Microphone

Facebook has been working on conquering the television space as it reportedly plans to release a TV streaming device.

This new device is set to be a part of the Facebook lineup of smart speakers known as Portal, potentially using the same core technology as these existing products. The TV streamer is slated to be released in time for the holidays.

Multiple insiders confirmed the project to Variety, where the device was described as a combination of video chatting, TV viewing, and augmented reality.

Facebook's Upcoming TV Streaming Device

Previously reported by Cheddar in 2018, Facebook's new device is said to be codenamed "Ripley" and capable of videocalling and entertainment services like the brand's YouTube competitor.

The device is expected to be equipped with a camera and microphone so that the company can focus on video chatting. If previous reports are accurate and the device is designed to sit on top of the TV, its camera could capture the room for video chats easily.

There's also speculation on the company using built-in speakers, which is quite risky. While it can ensure that Facebook gets better quality than just relying on television speakers, integrated speakers can make the product bulkier and translate to higher production costs for the company.

Variety noted that the Facebook device will most likely run on Android since other hardware products of the company have mostly been based on customized Android systems.

Tapping Big Companies For Content

According to a report from Information last July, Facebook has already reached out to Netflix, Disney, and other media outfits for the possibility of placing its streaming services on the company's future TV hardware.

It's still uncertain whether these third-party services are interested in being part of the product. However, Variety's sources confirmed that Facebook will indeed be more focused on content consumption on its new TV device, especially compared to the Portal devices.

Facebook's Focus On AR, Portal Devices

Aside from its other main features, the streaming hardware is expected to be the first product of its kind to bring augmented reality features to television screens. Facebook will also focus more on these features moving forward with the Portal collection.

The two Facebook Portal devices released in 2018 are also expected to get significant updates.

For now, the company is keeping mum on its upcoming Portal products and services.
