Apex Legends developers went on Reddit to apologize for how they handled the Iron Crown event, but what started out with good intentions soon turned into a flame war of sorts between Respawn Entertainment and the players.
Simply put, at least one representative from the studio resorted to name calling.
'A**hats,' 'D*cks,' And 'Freeloaders'
A Respawn community manager started the thread on Reddit, saying that they have to get better at letting the players know what to expect and that "this week has been a huge learning experience" for them.
After a couple of exchanges, however, one dev who goes by dk05 went off and called players "a**hats," ''d*cks," and "freeloaders."
"I've been in the industry long enough to remember when players weren't complete a**-hats to developers and it was pretty neat," they said.
Users, of course, didn't take that well, but that wasn't the end of it.
"I think technically I was calling gamers d*cks? I dunno. I had a spicy lunch, feelin' it," dk05 said.
Last but not least, the dev implies that there aren't enough players spending cash on Apex Legends.
"The amount of people who spend is crazy low, most of ya'll are freeloaders (and we love that!) and a change in price doesn't move the needle," they wrote.
Another dev posted on a different thread and attempted to make things civil.
"Drew and Jay are being honest with you, and they're good people. I'd suggest engaging with them in good faith in those Q&A threads if you have concerns or questions about all this. I mean; argue and have your opinions for sure, but the conspiracy & personal-attack stuff is disheartening," they said.
Recap
Respawn kicked off the Iron Crown event and brought a couple of new skins to the game, but there was one problem: The only way for players to get a chance to get them was through expensive loot box mechanics.
Needless to say, players weren't happy. In a bid to make things right, the devs announced that starting on Aug. 20 the skins would be available for 1,800 Apex Coins or approximately $18, which still makes them expensive and difficult to get.
Respawn posted the news on the Apex Legends subreddit, but the players weren't having it. That's when things started to turn sour.
