The golden anniversary of the epic lunar landing is coming up fast.
To celebrate this commemoration of man's first steps on the moon, Lego is releasing a building set of the Apollo 11 lander.
'Really Cool' Lego Apollo 11 Lunar Lander
Coming soon on June 1, Lego's version of the NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander will sell for $99.99. This 1,087-piece building set from Lego's more advanced Creator expert line is a highly detailed display model built by designer Lars Joe to celebrate space exploration and the Apollo landing.
Based on Lego's description of the product, the collectible model features "a highly detailed replica of the Apollo 11 Eagle lunar module, a depiction of the lunar surface, complete with crater, footprints, and a U.S. flag."
"The model is really cool. It's built like the real spacecraft. The whole thing lands on the Moon...," said Lego designer Lars Joe as he explained the features and design of building set in a video.
According to Joe who worked with NASA in designing the lander, the module has three pieces: the top part with the main command module that houses two astronauts, the descent stage with four legs connected to it for landing on the moon, and the moon surface piece that has craters, astronaut footprints, and a sticker of the iconic plaque that was left on the lunar surface in 1969.
The descent stage that represents the landing flight is accented with gold-colored landing pads and panels, opening camera, laser hatches, and a ladder. The ascent stage for the return flight features a detailed interior with room for two mini figures: golden-helmeted astronauts in white spacesuits presumably representing spaceflight icons Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
Accessory elements include a brick-built video camera and laser reflector. Lego said the set that measures over 7 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 7 inches deep will be a great centerpiece display.
Lego City Space Sets
This is the third time that Lego released a building set to celebrate the lunar landing. The first set was released in 1976, followed by a Discovery-themed space exploration line in 2003.
In 2017, it released a meter high brick model of the NASA Apollo Saturn V. The 1,900-piece set has authentic details, 3 removable rocket stages with the lunar lander, and lunar orbiter.
The new Apollo lunar lander will add to the seven new Lego City Space sets that depict the future of NASA's space exploration. Included in the collection that will be available globally on June 1 and in North America beginning June 23 are the following building sets:
- 60224 Satellite Service Mission
- 60225 Rover Testing Drive
- 60230 People Pack
- 60226 Mars Research Shuttle
- 0227 Lunar Space Station
- 60228 Deep Space Rocket and Launch Control
- 60229 Rocket Assembly & Transport
