Oreo To Release Limited Edition Cookies For Moon Landing's 50th Anniversary

Nabisco, makers of the popular chocolate sandwich cookie Oreo, is launching a limited edition snack in line with the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing.

The company announced on Tuesday that it will release its new Oreo Marshmallow Moon cookies in June to celebrate NASA's historic Apollo 11 mission, which sent the first astronauts to the moon.

Moon Landing Anniversary Cookies

A spokesperson for Nabisco told space enthusiast website collectSPACE that the Marshmallow Moon cookies will feature three new Oreo designs inspired by the Moon Landing. All of these variants will come with purple marshmallow creme filling.

The first cookie design shows a cartoonish waning crescent moon that is flanked by three stars. Meanwhile, the second one shows an Apollo astronaut in a spacesuit standing beside a flag with a ringed planet and stars behind him. The third design has a space shuttle traveling through space while passing by several planets and stars.

The limited edition cookies will be available in special glow-in-the-dark packaging, complete with anniversary sticker sets. It also has an inscription that says "Moon Landing 50th Anniversary."

While Oreos were already available by the time of the Moon Landing on July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins, and Neil Armstrong did not have the cookies along with them on the spaceflight. What they did have were sugar cookies formed into cubes.

Oreo's Tribute To NASA Milestones

Nabisco has been active in paying tribute to NASA's achievements in the field of space exploration.

In 2012, the company celebrated the space agency's landing of the Curiosity rover on Mars by launching a social media post with the hashtag #dailytwist. The campaign featured an image of an Oreo cookie with rover tracks shown in the brand's red-colored creme.

When Armstrong passed away in 2012, Nabisco also paid homage to the first man on the moon by releasing a special graphic on its cookies in his honor.

"To the man who made us believe in the impossible," the Oreo maker wrote.

The special edition Oreo also showed the words "celebrating an American hero" along with the image of the Apollo 11 commander in his spacesuit, cast over the signature white creme of the cookie.

Nabisco joins other companies in commemorating the 50th anniversary of NASA's Moon Landing by offering limited edition products. Fisher Space Pen, Zippo lighters, Omega watches, and Budweiser have already announced their own tributes for the historic event.

NASA's Lunar Landing Celebrations

Other organizations have lined up several celebrations in time for the lunar landing anniversary. Last month, the Smithsonian announced that it will put Neil Armstrong's spacesuit on display at the National Air and Space Museum this summer.

The fragile spacesuit, which Armstrong wore during the Apollo 11 mission, will be placed in a state-of-the-art display case while it is on exhibit.

The museum will also conduct commemorative and educational programs for visitors from July 16 to July 20.

These include the "Discover the Moon Day!" where people can join educational and fun-filled activities centered on the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing.

There will also be a simulation of the Moon landing that will allow visitors to retrace the steps of Armstrong and his crew.
