Hyundai promises Google Glass support for 2015 Genesis sedan

Hyundai has confirmed Google Glass integration with its 2015 Genesis luxury sedan.

The company said that its next generation of cars, starting with the 2015 Genesis, will let owners connect with their cars using wearable devices such as the Google Glass.

Google already released the Explorer Edition of the Google Glass to developers in February 2013 and the company hopes to release the consumer version of the gadget sometime in 2014.

The carmaker's cloud-based Blue Link platform develops features like remote start and service information, both of which are quickly accessible through devices such as Google Glass.

Wearable devices will help owners save time and bring additional convenience to drivers by allowing remote interaction with the vehicle without the need to pull out another portable device. The launch of Blue Link Glassware app in the near future with the upcoming 2015 Genesis sedan is also scheduled.

"We see wearables as a technology trend, expanding from fitness and health monitoring to broader applications," said Barry Ratzlaff, executive director, Customer Connect and Service Business Development, Hyundai Motor America. "As a leader in connected car technology, we're always exploring new ways to use technology to enhance the ownership experience for our customers. Wearables are a great way to extend the experience outside of the vehicle by leveraging these small screens to quickly access remote features and deliver timely vehicle information."

Wearable device apps will be included in Hyundai's existing mobile app offerings, which are designed to offer Hyundai owners convenient and easy access to the Blue Link features and Car Care services. Hyundai plans to launch the 2015 Genesis with new infotainment and connectivity features powered by Blue Link.

"Genesis is a unique take on luxury where the owner experience is enabled through the intelligent application of technology, features and services that empower the owner," said Mark Dipko, director of Corporate Planning and Strategy at Hyundai Motor America. "We feel this vehicle is a great product to showcase how the latest technology can enhance the ownership experience and give owners more time and convenience."

The Blue Link app for Google Glass will offer Genesis owners similar remote services they would get using a smartphone. Features include basic remote control such as door lock/unlock, car maintenance notifications and the option of sending Google Maps directions to the car itself.
