Toad The Dog
Toad is a 5-year-old dog that was born with a rare condition in that she has two mouths and one ear. Where her right ear should be is actually a second mouth that does not actually function like a mouth, but has two teeth and jowls, and salivates.
The condition was observed during an initial exam when the veterinarian thought that Toad has extra ears. However, it was during a spay surgery that they discovered that it was actually an extra mouth. And while the second mouth does not often cause pain, veterinarians removed some cracked teeth that might be causing some issues.
Toad was once a stray dog that was taken in by the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Shelter before she made her way to Mutt Misfits Animal Rescue Society. Apart from her second mouth, she also has limited hearing, sight, and sense of smell because of the misalignment of her skull.

As mentioned, Toad is just one of the many dogs that Mutt Misfits Animal Rescue Society takes care of. According to Heather Hernandez, the president and one of the charity’s founders, the group was formed because not many shelters take in animals that have special needs. While many take in highly adoptable pooches, the charity focuses on those with medical issues and special needs such as those that are advanced in age, or those with injuries.
According to Hernandez, they want people to understand that animals do not have to be perfect to become perfect pets.
