Manufacturers are moving on from the notch to a pinhole in the screen, and Nokia could be following the trend and have a smartphone with a punch-hole camera in store.
Presumably called the Nokia 8.1 Plus, it showed up in a 360-degree video and leaked renders that tell a lot of what to expect.
Punch-hole, Hole-punch, Pinhole Camera
The leak is courtesy of @OnLeaks and 91Mobiles who got ahold of leaked CAD files that are believed to be of the Nokia 8.1 Plus.
Arguably the most interesting detail to take away from the renders and the 360-degree video is the punch-hole camera in the top-left corner of the screen, which is said to measure at 6.22 inches and have an FHD+ resolution.
Of course, that's not all there is that's worth attention. There's also a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top, a Zeiss dual-camera configuration coupled with a dual-LED flash, and a fingerprint reader on the rear.
New Trend, New Design
HMD Global already unveiled the Nokia 8.1, which sports a notch, in December. In other words, the potential Nokia 8.1 Plus could have more differences from its predecessor than a bigger screen and a few spec bumps here and there.
Most smartphone makers such as Lenovo and Huawei are taking a page from Samsung's playbook and its Infinity-O display (as seen on the Galaxy A8s). At that, it shouldn't be much of a stretch to believe that Nokia is taking the same route as the others, but as always, it's advised to take the info culled from the leaked renders with a grain of salt.
In other related news, the Nokia 9 PureView recently got leaked. It's expected to have a penta-lens camera configuration, wireless charging support, and an under-display fingerprint scanner. It's believed to be HMD Global's flagship for 2019.
