While companies such as Oppo and Vivo are trying their best to eliminate the notch, Sharp just made a phone with not just one, but two. Meet the Aquos R2 Compact, the very first phone to sport dual notches.
Why someone would ever want two notches on their phone is anyone's guess. Last year, Sharp also released the R Compact, a phone with a tiny camera notch on the top edge coupled with a big bezel on the bottom for the fingerprint sensor. Suffice it to say that it didn't look pleasing, and its sequel seems similarly polarizing design-wise.
Are Two Notches Better Than One?
Most people hate the notch. Several have come to terms with it. But so few can say outright, with genuine confidence, that they love it — let alone prefer it. As such, adding another notch could be seen by a lot of consumers as a false move. To be fair to Sharp, it's still following rules when it comes to notches: Google recommends not more than two on a given device.
Sharp Aquos R2 Compact Specs
The Aquos R2 Compact sports a 5.2-inch 2,280 x 1,080 IGZO LCD display that wraps around the camera and the fingerprint sensor. The bezels are still huge compared with other phones, but they're a notable improvement over the previous design. The under-the-hood specs are nothing to sneeze at, though. The phone comes equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, which is currently the best chip in the mobile industry. That's paired with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of expandable storage. It's running Android 9 Pie out of the box, too. On the back is a 22.6-megapixel f/1.9 shooter. Keeping everything juiced up is a 2,500 mAh battery, which is pretty lackluster on paper but is offset by the relatively small display.
Sharp Aquos R2 Compact Pricing And Availability
The R2 Compact becomes available in Japan in mid-January next year. Pricing is still unavailable at the time of writing. Given that Sharp phones rarely make it out of their home country, there's only a slim chance the R2 Compact hits stateside. Make sure to check back with Tech Times as we learn more.
