The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is King of the Box Office on Christmas Weekend

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is still trending above all others at the box office in the United States, and it is expected to do so until sometime in January of 2015. The final film in The Hobbit trilogy is the least loved, but that is not stopping it from doing well.

The Peter Jackson directed film ended the weekend with $41.4 million, above all else, in the United States. Overall, the movie has so far grossed $168.5 million domestically and $573.6 million worldwide. This number is expected to increase in the coming weeks as folks are still celebrating the Christmas holiday and preparing for the New Year.

It is very clear right now that The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies might never cross the $1 billion mark since a plethora of potentially great films are preparing to usher in the New Year. At this rate, it would be a miracle if the movie grossed $1 billion.

In second place is the Angelina Jolie directed film, Unbroken. It is a movie about a true story that happened in World War 2. This alone along with the Jolie name are enough to draw in moviegoers, despite all the bad reviews Unbroken has received since opening.

So far, the film has grossed $47.3 million, with an opening earning at $37.1 million. We don't see this movie going far, but we do view it as a decent start for Angelia Jolie's path to becoming a full-fledged movie director.

Settling for third spot is the Disney made, Into the Woods. It's a musical film that derives from the Broadway musical of the same name. The film kicked off with earnings of $31 million and so far went on to gain $46.1 million since it opened on Christmas Day.

Both Unbroken and Into the Woods managed to perform beyond what the industry had expected, and that can only mean great things for 2014.

Nevertheless, we expect industry earnings in 2014 to be lesser than 2013. The failure of Sony to launch The Interview in all theaters within the United States and internationally, is something that will definitely hurt this year's potential earnings.

Here are the estimates for the end of last week, via Rentrak.

1. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies $41.4 million

2. Unbroken $31.7 million

3. Into the Woods $31 million

4. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb $20.6 million

5. Annie $16.6 million

6. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 $10 million

7. The Gambler $9.3 million

8. The Imitation Game $7.9 million

9. Exodus: Gods and Kings $6.8 million

10. Wild $5.4 million
