The world of Harry Potter teaches children a lot of things, and thanks to startup Kano, that will now include coding to allow kids to make their own wands.
The Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit may not enable the spells found in the books, but it will teach children a different kind of magic that they will hopefully nurture as they grow older.
The Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit: Here's What It Offers
Kano revealed the Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit, a system that looks to combine the magical franchise with coding education for children.
The Harry Potter kit by Kano comes with a build-it-yourself magic wand that features electronic sensors, namely a gyroscope, magnetometer, and accelerometer, to grant it magical powers. The wand itself is easy to assemble, with just a small computer needing to be inserted into its base.
The wand interacts with coding content on tablets powered by iOS or Android and computers running Windows and Mac. Kids will be able to create codes associated with wand movements, such as making owls appear by lifting the wand and ringing a bell by twisting it.
Switching out magic words for lines of code with the Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit will not be as complicated as the original Kano Computer Kit. This should make it more accessible as a tool to teach younger kids how to code.
What's The Point Of Coding Kits For Kids?
Similar to other programmable electronic toys, the Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit looks to teach the basic concepts of coding for children. The Harry Potter-themed app offers a graphical interface where magical spells are represented as virtual blocks of code that can be combined and edited to complete a variety of challenges.
Children are not limited to the 70 challenges included in the kit's app, though. It also features a sandbox mode where kids will be able to apply what they learned to create spells of their own. They will then be able to upload their projects to Kano World, where young coders are allowed to share their work, as well as download them to try out new programs.
The Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit makes learning JavaScript simple and fun for children so that they will pick up a skill that will be very useful as the world moves further into a digital age.
Preorders are now open for the Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit, which is being sold at $99.99 each. Wannabe wizards will not have to wait long to start learning how to create magic spells, as the kit will start shipping on Oct. 1.
