A musician whose horrid odor led to an emergency landing in May of this year has died. The smell from the Russian guitarist wasn't from poor hygiene but was, in fact, the smell of his flesh rotting due to an infection he contracted while on vacation.
A Deadly Flight
Andrey Suchilin was removed from a flight going to the Netherlands from Spain on May 29, 2018. The pilot made the decision to land the plane in Portugal after passengers complained of the unbearable odor that made them sick and faint.
Suchilin was examined by a medical staff in Portugal where it was discovered that the 58-year-old was suffering from severe tissue necrosis or gangrene. Prior to the emergency landing, passengers claimed that the musician had boarded the plane but began vomiting and passed out when the plane took off. Passengers were also unaware that Suchilin was that sick and tried to quarantine him before the pilot decided to land the plane.
Suchilin was told by doctors in Spain that it was just an ordinary beach infection and gave him antibiotics.
Before his death, the musician wrote on his Facebook wall about the incident and that his health insurance had expired. "The tragic and comic component of this whole situation is that I caught a disease, which (let's not say how and why) makes a man quite stinky," Suchilin wrote.
In June, his wife, Lidia wrote on his social media page this condition has worsened and he was placed in intensive care. Lidia asked friends to help raise money to cover her husband's medical expenses.
Andrey's Final Days
On June 2, Lidia wrote another update on her husband's Facebook account, stating that the condition couldn't be stopped despite Andrey undergoing surgery. Lidia also stated that Andrey was in a medical coma.
The musician's condition continued to get worse as the tissue necrosis spread to his lungs and kidneys. Lidia confirmed that her husband died on June 25th. Suchilin, who was described as one of Russia's top guitar players, was a prominent figure in the Soviet Union's rock music scene in the 1980's.
Necrosis is described as a medical condition in which the tissues in the body die after being deprived of oxygen. This can happen after a person is injured, infected, or has deep vein thrombosis. The condition can also be treated but the areas affected have to be removed in time before more damage can occur.
