McDonald's teases a new accessory just in time for National Selfie Day on Thursday. The fast-food chain promises mess-free self-portrait shots with the "Frylus."
Offering More Than Just Burgers
The announcement seems like a belated April Fool's Day prank but it's apparently real. Just like the previous year when it revealed a new form of cutlery called the "Frork," the company plans to offer a supposedly innovative new product for customers who love their selfies.
Obviously, there are better methods to take the perfect shot, such as wireless remotes, selfie sticks, and tripods, but it is difficult with messy hands, according to the press release. The item is a cross-promotion alongside the reworked Quarter Pounder. It will be available for a limited time and in very limited numbers on June 21.
Most people speculate that this might become a trend for the restaurant. Based on the popularity of its previous offerings, it appears to have found a new niche that attracts more customers.
Social Media Support
For those who are curious, the Frylus is a combination of a yellow stylus that looks like a French fry and a foldable stand. McDonald's confirms that it will be a time-limited offer, which is only available on June 21. The fast-food chain will distribute a total of 100,000 units among its 2,000 participating branches.
To qualify for the product, customers must purchase a Quarter Pounder on National Selfie Day. The company expects a huge demand for the accessory, so patrons are advised to come in early and order their burgers before lunch. To help promote the event, the restaurant collaborated with Instagram star Kirby Jenner.
"He's a man who knows his way around a selfie, and he's ready to inspire you to take mess-free selfies while enjoying our hotter and juicier new 100% fresh beef Quarter Pounder burgers," a statement from McDonald's reads.
Products People Never Knew They Needed
These days, it is common to see people taking selfies before and after meals at restaurants. McDonald's acknowledges this with the Frylus, which comes out on National Selfie Day. This is the second time the company created a product to serve a specific purpose and promote its menu at the same time.
Last year, customers got a chance to grab the "Frork," a plastic tube designed to hold French fries as tines of a fork. The item was released alongside a new line of sandwiches with various toppings. Its design was intended to pick up toppings that drop during a meal.
The Frylus will be available on June 21, until supplies last.
