Netflix has picked up Fox drama Lucifer for a fourth season following its cancellation in May. An episode count has yet to be determined.
This isn't the first time Netflix has saved a show from cancellation. It previously picked up Longmire after A&E canceled the series. It also revived Arrested Development for fourth and fifth seasons following its cancellation in 2006.
Lucifer is the second show from Fox to move on to a different network following its cancellation — just this past May, NBC picked up Brooklyn Nine-Nine for a sixth season after Fox axed the comedy show. Dropping both Lucifer and Brooklyn Nine-Nine comes as the network undergoes a dramatic shift amid the sale of 21st Century Fox — Fox's studio counterpart — to Disney, as The Hollywood Reporter notes.
Why Was 'Lucifer' Canceled?
Despite accumulating zealous fans over the years, Lucifer never became a ratings knockout for the network. In its third season, it only averaged a 1.3 rating among adults 18 to 49 and nearly 5 million viewers once all live-plus-seven-day lifts were factored in. It didn't help that the show aired alongside the X-Files revival and Gotham.
Lucifer Cast Reactions
Tom Ellis, who plays titular character Lucifer Morningstar, was the first one to react on social media following Netflix's save.
""#LuciferSeason4 on @Netflix wow that sounds nice. You fans made this happen," he wrote.
Indeed, Netflix's decision comes after an impassioned plea by fans to save the show. Warner Bros. TV also started shopping it to other networks immediately following its cancellation in May, including streaming services and premium cable networks.
Showrunner Joe Henderson expressed gratitude to fans of Lucifer.
"YOU did this. So relax, take a breath, put some ice on those fingers that have been hashtagging up a storm... and get ready for more deviltime," he wrote.
Lesley Ann Brandt, who portrays Mazikeen, also shared her reaction on Twitter, tweeting:
"All the feels right now. Thank you Lucifer fans. Getting out the leather pants right away!"
Laurie German, who plays Detective Chloe Decker, also thanked fans for encouraging other networks to pick up Lucifer, tweeting:
"YOU GUYS. OUR SHOW IS BACK. LUCIFER LIVES. WE DID IT. WE REALLY DID IT. I'M GONNA BURST. WE FOUGHT AND WE WON. ️ #WeSavedLucifer #LuciferOnNetflix"
