The Google Pixel XL takes longer to wake up after the latest update, but Google promises a fix will become available in the next few weeks.
The Pixel 2 XL has plenty of strong suits, but one of the main reasons to buy a Pixel device is the pure Android experience that should ensure that it moves faster than other Android smartphones.
Pixel 2 XL June OTA Affects Wake-Up Time
The smartphone received an OTA update a week ago, however, and users have reported that it now takes a few seconds more to wake up. Frustrated Pixel 2 XL owners have taken to Reddit and other online venues to complain about this issue, and a Google issue tracker confirms that such reports are piling up.
A regular smartphone user typically unlocks their device at least 10 times per day, so a longer wake-up time is understandably frustrating. As of this writing, it's unclear why the latest OTA has increased the smartphone's wake-up time.
If previously it would wake from sleep in less than a second, after the June OTA, the Pixel 2 XL now takes two or three seconds to react. The update rolled out with a fix for a bug affecting the proximity sensor, and it also brought the latest Android security patches for the month of June.
Users speculated that the update might have affected the fingerprint scanner somehow, thus making the device slower to wake up, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Pixel 2 XL Wake-Up Issue Workaround
Google replied to the Reddit thread and acknowledged the issue, promising a fix and suggesting a temporary workaround in the meantime.
"We are aware that some Pixel 2 XL users are experiencing occasional delays with wake ups. We have now identified a fix which will be rolling out in the coming weeks," says Google.
Until the fix is ready to roll out, Google suggests setting the Ambient Display of the Pixel 2 XL to be "always on," which should solve the issue for the time being. This indicates that the issue is not with the fingerprint scanner as some might have thought, but with the Ambient Display.
No other solution is available at this point, and Google's "in the coming weeks" timeline means that the fix will roll out with the July OTA.
